Is Underfloor Heating a Good Choice for a Garden Annexe?

From the outset, we’ll specify your Garden Annexe to accommodate all your heating requirements

Is Underfloor Heating a Good Choice for a Garden Annexe?

Underfloor heating can be installed in a garden annexe, but it isn't something we routinely recommend. In most cases, we believe modern, individually controlled electric panel radiators provide a simpler, more flexible and cost-effective way to heat a well-insulated garden annexe.

At Garden Annexes, we therefore normally specify ultra-flat electric panel radiators in the living area and bedrooms rather than underfloor heating.

Why don't we normally recommend underfloor heating?

One of the main considerations is cost.

Underfloor heating adds to the initial cost of an annexe and requires additional installation work. For a relatively compact and well-insulated living space, we don't believe that additional expenditure necessarily provides a worthwhile benefit compared with modern electric panel radiators.

There is also the question of flexibility.

Underfloor heating can affect your furniture layout

Something that's easily overlooked when choosing underfloor heating is the relationship between the heating system and your furniture.

The heating layout needs to be considered at the design stage because heating elements cannot simply be positioned indiscriminately beneath furniture and other items that restrict the release of heat.

This can mean deciding relatively early where certain pieces of furniture are going to be positioned.

For a garden annexe that may need to adapt to its resident's requirements over many years, we generally prefer a heating solution that doesn't impose the same constraints on future room layouts.

How do we normally heat a Garden Annexe?

Our preferred solution is ultra-flat electric panel radiators.

We typically install these in the living area and bedrooms. Each radiator is digitally and thermostatically controlled, allowing the temperature of individual rooms to be managed according to how and when they're being used.

This gives the resident straightforward control over the heating without requiring a more complex underfloor system.

What are the advantages of electric panel radiators?

For the type of highly insulated, relatively compact homes we manufacture, panel radiators offer several practical advantages:

  • Individual thermostatic control for different rooms

  • Fast and straightforward temperature adjustment

  • Lower initial installation complexity

  • Greater flexibility when arranging furniture

  • Straightforward future maintenance or replacement

  • No need to design the room around heating elements beneath the floor

For these reasons, we consider them a particularly practical solution for garden annexe living.

Can I still specify underfloor heating?

If underfloor heating is particularly important to you, discuss it with us during the design and specification stage.

However, it's worth understanding the additional cost and practical considerations before deciding whether it offers a meaningful advantage for your particular annexe.

For most of our customers, our recommendation remains a modern, individually controlled electric panel heating system.

Choosing the right heating for your garden annexe

Heating is just one element of creating a comfortable annexe, and the right solution should take account of the size of the building, its insulation, how individual rooms will be used and the needs of the resident.

We consider these factors as part of the annexe specification, with the aim of creating a comfortable home that's also straightforward and flexible to live with.
